FAQ

Q: Can I replace or add my own SSD in the BLACKB0X?

A: Absolutely. Every BLACKB0X is fully user-serviceable. Just open the unit and install any NVMe M.2 2280 SSD. (Note: The PCB only supports this specific size and interface—SATA or 2230/2242 drives will not fit).

Q: Why didn’t you include an SSD in the other reward tiers?

A: Global SSD prices have been volatile, making supply inconsistent and expensive. To keep the BLACKB0X accessible to more backers, we created a budget-friendly tier without a drive. This lowers your entry price while giving you the freedom to choose your preferred brand, capacity, and performance—since every unit is 100% user-upgradeable.

Q: Can I connect and transfer data directly from and to my smartphone?

A: Absolutely. The BLACKB0X supports seamless, plug-and-play data transfers with smartphones. Simply use the mode-switching button to toggle between charging mode (for powering your phone on the go) and data transfer mode (for file access)—ensuring you’re always in the right state for the job without any guesswork.
For Android users, just connect via USB-C and you’re ready to go. For iPhone users, note that direct connectivity requires a separate adapter—such as Apple’s Lightning-to-USB Camera Adapter, or a standard USB-C cable for iPhone 15 and later models—to enable the connection.

Q: Is aluminium the only color available right now?

A: For the initial production run, yes—we are sticking with CNC-milled aluminium in its natural/silver finish. This material allows us to meet the extremely tight tolerances required for full waterproofing. Once our waterproof testing is finalized, we will unlock additional anodized colors (we’ll let backers vote on which colors come first!).

Q: Why is it taking so long to produce the first units?

A: To be fully transparent: we have working 3D-printed prototypes (which you see in our videos). However, moving to mass production requires expensive injection molds and CNC tooling. This Kickstarter is what funds that final tooling phase. Once we hit our goal, we estimate tooling will take 12 weeks, with first shipments going out by May 2027. We aren’t cutting corners—we’re building it right.

Q: Are the 3D-printed versions waterproof?

A: Short answer: No. While they feature the same seals and offer light splash-resistance, the natural inconsistencies of 3D printing mean we cannot guarantee full submersion protection. Only the CNC-milled aluminium production units will be fully waterproof.

Q: Are the 3D-printed versions shock-resistant?

A: Short answer: No. They include our shock-absorbing mounts, but the HIPS plastic cover is printed at 40% infill to save weight. This offers limited drop protection, but for rugged, outdoor reliability, we strongly recommend the aluminium production model.

Q: What tools do I need to install my own SSD? Does opening it void my warranty?

A: You’ll only need two allen keys. Opening the device does NOT void your warranty—we designed it to be upgraded. However, if you physically damage the PCB or connectors during installation, that specific damage won’t be covered. We’ll include a step-by-step video guide!

Q: Won’t a high-performance SSD overheat inside a sealed, waterproof box?

A: Great catch. The BLACKB0X chassis is CNC-milled aluminium, which acts as a massive passive heatsink. The internal thermal pad transfers heat directly from your SSD to the metal casing, keeping temperatures well within safe limits even under heavy loads.

Q: What is the estimated delivery date, and how firm is it?

A: We are targeting May 2027 for shipping. While tooling and manufacturing always carry slight risks of delay, we have already secured our manufacturing partner and raw material suppliers. We will send monthly production updates so you know exactly where we stand.

Q: Do you ship worldwide? How much will shipping cost, and will I pay customs?

A: Yes, we ship globally. Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on your region. Please note: Backers outside the Netherlands are responsible for any local import duties, VAT, or customs fees—these are not included in your pledge. Check your local thresholds before backing!
